Catnip (Nepeta cataria) belongs to the mint family. A compound in catnip, called nepetalactone, is what cats react to. If you've never seen a cat react to catnip, you're in for quite a spectacle. Licking, rolling over, kicking, rubbing, and lots of drooling usually lasts about 20 frantic, exciting minutes. Then the cat calms down, "resets," before allowing itself another delightful encounter with the irresistible catnip. Many species of wild cats also respond to this herb. Play and Instincts
